Get Started with Ledger

Welcome to your first step toward taking full control of your digital assets. This guide will help you set up your Ledger hardware wallet safely and confidently. Whether you are new to crypto or upgrading your security setup, this page will walk you through everything you need to begin.

Your Ledger device is designed to give you full ownership of your cryptocurrencies by keeping your private keys offline and protected from online threats. Unlike software wallets, your Ledger hardware wallet ensures that sensitive data never leaves the device.

What You Need Before You Start

Before setting up your Ledger device, make sure you have the following:

  • A genuine Ledger hardware wallet (Ledger Nano S Plus or Ledger Nano X)
  • A computer or smartphone with internet access
  • A USB cable (included with your device if applicable)
  • Around 10–20 minutes of uninterrupted time
  • A safe and private environment

It is important that you do not share your recovery phrase with anyone at any time during or after setup. Ledger will never ask for it.

Step 1: Unbox and Verify Your Device

Start by carefully unboxing your Ledger device. Inside the package, you should find:

  • The Ledger hardware wallet
  • USB cable
  • Recovery phrase sheets
  • Instruction leaflet

Before proceeding, verify that the packaging is intact and has not been tampered with. Genuine Ledger devices come with secure packaging. If anything appears suspicious, do not use the device and contact support immediately.

Step 2: Download Ledger Live

To manage your device and crypto assets, you will need Ledger Live — the official companion application.

Ledger Live allows you to:

  • Set up your device
  • Install crypto apps
  • Send and receive cryptocurrencies
  • Track your portfolio in real time
  • Manage security updates

Download Ledger Live only from the official Ledger website to avoid counterfeit software. Install it on your desktop or mobile device and follow the installation instructions.

Once installed, open the application and select “Get Started.”

Step 3: Initialize Your Device

Connect your Ledger device to your computer or smartphone using the USB cable or Bluetooth (if using Ledger Nano X).

You will be prompted to choose one of two options:

  • Set up as a new device
  • Restore from recovery phrase

If this is your first time, select “Set up as a new device.”

Next, you will be asked to:

  • Choose a PIN code (4 to 8 digits)
  • Confirm the PIN code

Your PIN code protects your device from unauthorized physical access. Choose a PIN that is memorable but not easily guessed.

Step 4: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most important step in the setup process.

Your Ledger device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the only backup of your crypto wallet. If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, your recovery phrase is the only way to restore access to your funds.

Write down each word carefully in the exact order shown on the device.

Important guidelines:

  • Never store your recovery phrase digitally (no screenshots, cloud storage, or email)
  • Never share it with anyone
  • Keep it offline and secure
  • Consider using a fireproof or metal backup for added protection

After writing it down, your device will ask you to confirm several words to ensure accuracy.

Step 5: Security Check and Authenticity Verification

Ledger Live performs a genuine device check to ensure your hardware wallet is authentic. This step protects you from counterfeit devices that may compromise your funds.

If your device passes verification, you can proceed. If not, stop immediately and contact official support.

Step 6: Install Apps for Your Cryptocurrencies

Ledger devices support multiple cryptocurrencies, but each asset requires a corresponding app installed on the device.

In Ledger Live:

  1. Navigate to “Manager”
  2. Connect and unlock your device
  3. Browse available crypto apps
  4. Click “Install” next to the assets you want

Popular supported assets include Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many ERC-20 tokens, among others.

Your device has limited storage, but you can uninstall and reinstall apps at any time without losing your funds.

Step 7: Add Accounts in Ledger Live

Once apps are installed, you can add accounts for each cryptocurrency:

  • Open Ledger Live
  • Click “Accounts”
  • Select “Add Account”
  • Choose the cryptocurrency
  • Follow prompts on your Ledger device

This allows you to view balances, track transactions, and manage multiple assets in one place.

Step 8: Receive Cryptocurrency

To receive crypto:

  1. Open Ledger Live
  2. Select the account you want to receive funds into
  3. Click “Receive”
  4. Verify the address on your Ledger device screen
  5. Copy the address and share it with the sender

Always verify the address on your device screen before sharing it. This prevents malware from altering clipboard addresses on your computer.

Step 9: Send Cryptocurrency

To send crypto securely:

  1. Open Ledger Live
  2. Select the account
  3. Click “Send”
  4. Enter recipient address and amount
  5. Confirm transaction details on your Ledger device
  6. Approve on the device

Every transaction must be physically confirmed on the hardware wallet, ensuring full control and protection against unauthorized transfers.

Security Best Practices

To keep your assets safe, follow these essential rules:

  • Never share your recovery phrase
  • Avoid phishing websites pretending to be Ledger
  • Always verify URLs before entering sensitive information
  • Keep your device firmware updated via Ledger Live
  • Store your recovery phrase in multiple secure offline locations
  • Use a strong PIN code that is not reused elsewhere

Remember: Ledger will never ask for your 24-word recovery phrase.

Troubleshooting & Support

If you encounter issues during setup:

  • Restart Ledger Live and reconnect your device
  • Try a different USB cable or port
  • Ensure your firmware is up to date
  • Check official help resources in Ledger Live

For additional support, visit the official Ledger support center through Ledger Live or the company website.

Why Ledger Security Matters

Cryptocurrencies give users full financial ownership, but with that freedom comes responsibility. Unlike traditional banking systems, there is no centralized authority to recover lost funds.

Ledger hardware wallets provide a secure foundation by isolating private keys from internet-connected devices. This dramatically reduces exposure to hacking, malware, and phishing attacks.

By using a Ledger device, you are taking an important step toward self-custody and financial independence.

Start Your Journey

You are now ready to begin using your Ledger device. Follow each step carefully, prioritize security, and take your time during setup.

Your crypto journey is built on trust, but more importantly, on self-sovereignty. With Ledger, you hold the keys—literally and securely.
